The Miniature Schnauzer was bred in the colder regions of Europe in Germany. The Miniature Schnauzer was bred by Germans sometime around the 15th century. The breed was adapted from the Standard Schnauzer to be a ratter rather than a herder like his ancestors. The Miniature Schnauzer is the most common of the three Schnauzer breeds. The Schnauzer is grouped into the Terrier group in the AKC because of its size although the personality of the Miniature Schnauzer is much different than most terriers. The smaller size of the Miniature Schnauzer made for an excellent ratting dog until it was brought to America where it quickly became a favorite for family pets.

In their early days the Miniature Schnauzer most likely would have been surviving off of its catches throughout the day and night since an overfed dog would have no need to continue hunting. Today the Miniature Schnauzer is known as one of the best house dogs you can have especially for apartment dwellers. The Miniature Schnauzer is a very intelligent breed with a friendly personality making him a very loyal family pet. Many famous people have owned Miniature Schnauzers including Mary Tyler Moore and Bruce Lee. As a family pet the Miniature Schnauzer does require some exercise but he doesn't have an overly active lifestyle. The Miniature Schnauzers ratting days are over thanks to pest control companies and now the Miniature Schnauzer is able to survive off of the food fed to him by his devoted family. With the change in lifestyle the Miniature Schnauzer is not going to require the same diet that it did in its beginnings and care needs to be taken to give them the proper nutrition to keep them at their healthiest.
