As the name tells, the Nova Scotia Tolling Duck Retriever comes from what is now Nova Scotia, Canada where it would be accustomed to a fairly cold climate. The breed was created in the 19th century and used by sportsmen in order to lure in waterfowl to be killed. The dog's beautiful reddish colored coat and bushy tail would look close enough like a fox that it would peak the curiosity of nearby birds who would come closer to get a better look. When the birds got closer they would be in gun range to be shot by a waiting hunter. The Nova Scotia Tolling Duck Retriever has an inexhaustible amount of energy making them a great fit for the role of attracting birds. After the fowl would be downed, the Nova Scotia Tolling Duck Retriever would then run out into the water, using their webbed feet, to get the bird and bring it back to the hunter. Everything about this breed makes it perfect for its job including his bright red and white coat that repels water, his webbed toes, and his energetic ready to please attitude.

Since we know the Nova Scotia Tolling Duck Retriever was a waterfowl hunting retriever we can assume that his diet would have consisted of what he was helping hunt such as ducks or geese. Although not a hunter himself he would still enjoy of a reward from the food he helped secure. In some areas the dogs are still used as retrieving dogs or as sporting dogs thanks to their endless supply of energy. It is said that the dog does everything 100%. Whether that means the job that they are tasked with or getting into 100% trouble they do everything to the fullest. Although only recently added to the AKC registry the Nova Scotia Tolling Duck Retriever has been a part of the Canadian Kennel Club since the 1950's. The sports dog can compete in agility training, obedience, and sporting events since they are very intelligent dogs, in fact so intelligent that they tend to be tricky. Whether the Nova Scotia Tolling Duck Retriever is being kept as a family pet or as a working dog the dog is usually not working for their food but rather they are faithfully fed every day.
