Choosing the Best Dog Food for an Overweight Puli

Puli

This Hungarian guard dog may benefit from a breed specific dog food to maintain overall optimal health and weight. Today the Puli generally enjoys a pampered life as a family pet and does not require the higher caloric intake that their herding and guarding ancestors did.

The History of Pulis and Obesity

Thought to have been brought to Hungary by the Mongolians over a 1000 years ago, the Puli was pried for its ability to alert shepherds of approaching prey. Shepherds revered the Puli for its ability to fight off wolves approaching herds. Their massive coat, sometimes referred to as dreadlocks, kept the wolves from penetrating their skin. Given the change in herding practices, the Puli is seldom used today and its numbers have continued to decline since WWll. While loyal and very active pets, Pulik (plural of Puli) do not respond well to being left alone for extended periods and will either become hyperactive or aloof and somewhat lazy. Puli require substantial daily exercise to maintain both their health and disposition. They are not ideal pets for city dwellers. In 1936 the Puli was recognized by the American Kennel Club.

Overweight/Obese Pulis in Modern Times

Left to their own resources, early Pulik most likely survived on a diet of hunting spoils and barn vermin. Today the Puli is revered for their unique coat of long brown/black cords which require substantial grooming or they will become manged. The Puli status was elevated in the United States when Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook, announced he had a white Puli named Beast. The Puli coat, or cords, are unique to this breed and will grown untamed if not properly groomed. Today, the Puli enjoys an active life as a pet for families across Eastern Europe and the United States. Unlike their ancestors, today's Puli generally does not have to hunt much past the kitchen for a bowl of food. Given their reduced activity level compared to their ancestors, the Puli may benefit from a very controlled calorie intake to remain at optimal weight and health.

The Best Dog Food for an Overweight Puli

Spot & Tango is a family run and family operated business. When you buy our dog food, we love to consider you a part of our extended family. As family, we want the best food for your Puli so that they can have the best chance at a long, healthy, and happy life. Many industrial dog foods have lots of fillers and additives that are not particularly beneficial for a Puli's diet. Sometimes, that poor quality can add to a Puli being obese. We use absolutely nothing but the best ingredients: human grade food comprised of pure meat, vegetables, and fruits.
